The Cisco Catalyst 1200 is the entry tier of the Catalyst managed-switch range — the step below the Catalyst 1300. It is aimed at the smallest deployments: a shop, a clinic, a small office or a satellite room that needs a managed switch with Cisco support behind it, rather than an unmanaged box that cannot be segmented, monitored or given VLANs.
Like the 1300, the range is fixed-configuration and covers 8, 16, 24 and 48 ports, with Power over Ethernet available on the P and FP variants. The 1200 is deliberately simpler than the 1300: fewer PoE budget options, a narrower uplink selection, and a feature set aimed at sites that will configure the switch once and leave it alone.
A model such as C1200-24FP-4X follows the same structure as the rest of the
entry Catalyst range:
Two variants sit outside that pattern: C1200-8T-D, the compact desktop
8-port switch with no uplink cages, and C1200-8P-E-2G / C1200-8T-E-2G,
the 8-port "E" models which carry a fuller feature set than the standard 8-port chassis.
Both are entry-tier managed switches and the naming is deliberately parallel, so the difference is easy to miss. The 1200 is the lower tier: fewer PoE variants, less uplink choice, and a feature set for sites that need managed switching and nothing beyond it. The 1300 adds the full range of PoE budgets and a complete set of uplink options, and is the better buy where the switch will be part of a larger network or where PoE headroom is expected to grow. If the requirement is "a managed switch for this room", the 1200 is the right answer; if it is "the access layer of a small network", look at the 1300.
The 8-port models fall into two shapes. C1200-8T-D is a compact desktop unit
with no SFP uplink cages — appropriate for a single small room where nothing needs to be
uplinked over fibre. The -8T-E-2G, -8P-E-2G and -8FP-2G
models add uplink cages and are the ones to choose where the switch has to reach something
beyond its own room. From 16 ports upward, every model has uplink cages as standard.
The PoE question is the one that most often forces a change of model late in a project:
As on every switch, the budget is a total for the switch, not a per-port allowance. Add up the rated consumption of every device you intend to power and keep 20–30% spare.
The 4X variants carry four 10-Gigabit SFP+ uplinks against four Gigabit SFP ports on the 4G versions, and they cost more for the same access-port count. A 10G uplink only runs at 10G if the device at the other end does too — in a network that is entirely Gigabit, the 4X premium buys nothing. Add it where the switch aggregates several rooms, or where the upstream distribution switch already has 10G ports. If you are unsure, the 4G model is the safe choice and the uplink is the one part of a fixed switch you cannot change later.
The 1200 is managed through its local web interface and through Cisco's small-business management tools. It is not a CLI-first platform and is not intended to be driven from a central automation system — that role belongs further up the Catalyst range. If the site will eventually need centralised management, that is another reason to step up to the 1300.

Tier. Both are entry-level managed switches with parallel model naming, but the 1200 is the lower tier — a reduced PoE variant line-up, a narrower uplink selection and a feature set aimed at a single small site. The 1300 offers the full set of PoE budgets and uplink options and is the better fit where the switch belongs to a larger network. Choose the 1200 for a room; the 1300 for an access layer.
It is the compact desktop 8-port model — no SFP uplink cages, so it serves a single room
without connecting to anything over fibre or a separate uplink. If the switch has to uplink,
take the -8T-E-2G or one of the PoE 8-port models instead.
The FP variant — C1200-8FP-2G — carries the full-power PoE+ budget,
against the standard budget of the P model. If the room has to power several devices at
once rather than one or two, FP is the one to choose.
Only if the rest of the network has 10G. A 10G uplink connected to a Gigabit switch negotiates down, so the premium buys nothing in an all-Gigabit topology. The 4G models are the right choice for a small site whose upstream is Gigabit.
Shared across the whole switch. A 24-port PoE model has one total budget that all powered devices draw from — it is not the same figure available on every port. Sum the rated draw of the devices you plan to connect and keep 20–30% in reserve.
Yes — it is a managed switch, so VLANs, spanning tree, link aggregation, port mirroring and the usual Layer 2 feature set are configurable through the web interface. What it does not provide is the deeper routing and automation feature set of the upper Catalyst tiers, which is the practical line between the 1200 and the 1300.
Yes. Gigabit SFP and 10-Gigabit SFP+ transceivers, DAC cables, fibre patch cords and rack-mount kits are all stocked separately. Tell us the switch model and the uplink distance and we will quote the complete link.
