Cisco Industrial Ethernet 1000 Switches

About the Cisco Industrial Ethernet 1000 Series

The Cisco Industrial Ethernet (IE) 1000 Series is the compact, DIN-rail-mounted switch line
built for the factory floor, a utility cabinet, a traffic-control box or any other place where
an office switch would not survive. It is a Lite Managed (LM) Layer 2 switch: setup and
monitoring come from a simple browser interface rather than a command line, which is why it is
often the first managed switch on a site with no network engineer.

What separates the IE 1000 from a normal switch is mechanical and electrical rather than
software-related. It runs on 24 V DC or low-voltage AC with redundant power inputs, tolerates
extended temperature ranges, and mounts on a DIN rail inside an enclosure. That is also worth
knowing before comparing prices: the whole range is a Fast Ethernet design on the copper
side, not Gigabit.

As with all Cisco industrial part numbers, the four models in this range read in a fixed
pattern — IE-1000-<copper><uplink>-LM:

  • First group — the copper access ports. T means plain copper ports with no
Power over Ethernet; P means the ports also carry PoE.

  • Second group — the uplink. T is one or two extra copper uplink ports;
S is Gigabit SFP fibre uplinks.

  • -LM — Lite Managed, the management tier shared by every model on this page.

So IE-1000-8P2S-LM is eight PoE copper ports with two Gigabit SFP uplinks, while
IE-1000-6T2T-LM is a non-PoE copper-only switch.

How to Choose a Cisco IE 1000

1. Decide whether the endpoints need PoE — this is the real fork in the range

The T and P models are not interchangeable, and the difference is not merely
extra watts:

  • T models (IE-1000-4T1T-LM, IE-1000-6T2T-LM) — copper ports only, no PoE, no fibre
uplink option. Every device on the switch needs its own power feed. In an industrial
cabinet that means an extra power supply and cabling per device, which is often more
expensive than the price step up to a PoE model.

  • P models (IE-1000-4P2S-LM, IE-1000-8P2S-LM) — the copper ports carry PoE and the
switch adds two Gigabit SFP uplinks. These are the models to choose when the cabinet
contains IP cameras, wireless access points, sensors or industrial phones.

2. Check the speed expectation before you buy

The copper ports on every IE 1000 model are Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps); only the SFP
uplinks on the P models run at Gigabit. For a camera or a sensor loop this is usually fine, but
do not plan an IE 1000 as an uplink shelf for a Gigabit backbone. If the endpoints are Gigabit
devices that need full speed on every port, this is the wrong range and the decision should be
made before the order, not after.

3. Count ports for the cabinet, not for today

The range spans 5, 8, 4+2 and 8+2 usable ports. Industrial cabinets are rarely expanded once
built, and adding a second switch later means a second DIN rail slot, a second power drop and a
second device to manage. Buying the 8-port version now is usually cheaper than adding hardware
into a sealed enclosure next year.

4. Plan the uplink medium

The P models' SFP uplinks are the right choice where the run back to the control room is
longer than copper comfortably covers, or where electrical isolation matters. Note that SFP
uplinks need transceivers and patch cords, which are stocked separately from the switch — tell
us the distance and we will quote the complete link rather than just the switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the IE 1000 copper ports Gigabit?

No. The copper access ports across the range are Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps). The two SFP
uplinks on the P models are Gigabit, so an IE-1000-8P2S-LM can aggregate its access traffic
upward at 1 Gbps, but no individual copper port runs faster than 100 Mbps.

What does the -LM suffix mean?

Lite Managed. It describes the management tier: the switch is configurable and monitorable
through a simple browser interface, without the full CLI feature set of the higher industrial
ranges. For a cabinet of cameras or sensors it is usually all the management a site needs.

Can I power IP cameras directly from the switch?

Yes, on the two P models. Choose IE-1000-4P2S-LM for four cameras or IE-1000-8P2S-LM for
eight. The two T models provide no PoE at all, so cameras attached to them need separate power
injectors or power supplies inside the cabinet.

Does the IE 1000 come with mounting hardware?

It is designed for DIN-rail mounting inside an enclosure. Confirm the rail type and the
enclosure depth before installation — an industrial switch in a shallow cabinet with no
clearance for the cable bend radius is a recurring installation problem.

Which PoE standard do the P models support?

They deliver PoE to the copper ports for standard powered devices such as IP cameras, access
points and industrial telephones. As with any switch, add up the rated draw of every powered
device and keep reserve headroom rather than running the PoE section at its ceiling.

Do you supply the SFP transceivers and fibre for the uplinks?

Yes. Gigabit SFP transceivers, and the single-mode or multimode fibre patch cords to match,
are stocked separately. Give us the switch model and the uplink distance and we will quote the
whole link.

Can I use an IE 1000 as a normal office switch?

It will work, but it is the wrong tool. You would be paying for the hardened enclosure, the
wide-temperature components and the DC power design, and you would be limited to Fast Ethernet
on the copper ports — an ordinary Catalyst 1000 or 1300 gives more speed and more ports for
less money indoors.
