The Three Generations

Stacking Cables Are Not Universal

• Catalyst 9200 uses the C9200-STACK-KIT (StackWise-160).
• Catalyst 9200L needs the C9200L-STACK-KIT (StackWise-80) - the cables look similar but are not interchangeable.
• Catalyst 9300 uses StackWise-480 cables in 0.5m, 1m and 3m lengths.
• Catalyst 9300L uses its own kit with adapters (StackWise-320).

Mixing Rules

Stacks must be homogeneous: a 9200 cannot join a 9200L stack, and a 9300L cannot join a 9300 stack. License levels should also match across members. Plan firmware upgrades stack-wide - one control plane means one software image strategy.

StackWise Virtual Is Different

StackWise Virtual links two chassis (typically Catalyst 9500-class or 9600) through 40G/100G ports into a virtual single chassis. Use rings at the access layer; use SV pairs at distribution/core for redundancy without stacking complexity.
